August 22, 2007  Germany - Man returns "cursed" Pharaoh piece
 
A man handed in a package containing a part of a Pharaonic carving to the Egyptian embassy in Berlin, saying that his stepfather had suffered a "curse of the Pharaohs" for stealing it.  His stepfather had taken it during a visit to Egypt in 2004, and then suffered from paralysis, nausea, unexplained fevers, and finally cancer before dying recently.  A committee of experts at the Supreme Council of Antiquities in Cairo is attempting to verify the authenticity of the piece.

August 20, 2007  Human Footprint May Be Oldest Ever Found
 
Zahi Hawass reported today to the SCA that a footprint found near Siwa could go back about two million years, while Khaled Saad, directory of prehistory on the council said that based on the age of the rock where the footprint was found, it could date even further back than the 3 million year old fossil, Lucy, found in 1974. Archaeologists are using carbon tests on plants found in the rock to determine its' age.

August 17, 2007  Egypt Arrests 2 Culture Officials

On Thursday, Egypt arrested and charged with bribery, two ranking officials at the Culture Ministry for taking kickbacks from the construction companies restoring the nation's antiquities, a security official said.

July 28, 2007   More News on Louisiana Mummy
 
Further news was released today on the mummy in the Louisiana Art and Science Museum in Baton Rouge, La. He appears to be a mummy created by natural dessication in the sand, and has all of his organs in the body.  He had red hair, and was between 124 and 132 pounds at the time of his death. He stood between 67 and 68 inches tall at the time of his death, about 2300 years ago.

July 18, 2007   Louisiana Mummy under examination

 

Louisiana Art & Science Museum’s prized Egyptian mummy is undergoing x-ray and CT-Scan examination in St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Gonzales, La.   Museum curators will announce the results when the Art & Science Museum’s renovated Egyptian Exhibit reopens on July 27. The mummy tentatively dates from the Ptolemaic Period.

 

Ellen's note: This is the same mummy that, years ago, had to be brought into the state in a station wagon or some such sneaky way, because Lousiana. law did not permit the entry of a body without the written permission of the next of kin.

July 13, 2007  Identity of Thutmose I mummy questioned

Reuters has reported that based on CT scans there seems to be reason to believe that at least some of the Royal Mummies have been misidentified. The mummy identified as Thutmose I appears to be that of a much younger man.

"I am now questioning all the mummies," reported Dr Zahi Hawass of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities to Reuters in an interview. "We have to check them all again.

July 7, 2007 Hatshepsut was obese and balding and sick

Discovery and examination of the mummy of Hatshepsut has shown that she was fat, bald, suffered from diabetes, had decayed teeth and possible suffered from a skin disease.
